Girl… let’s be honest, building your own website sounds like a fun DIY project at first. I can almost see it happening… You sign up for a website builder, pick a cute template, pour a coffee, and think, “I got this!” But then somewhere between choosing fonts, resizing photos, and trying to make everything “pop,” it gets overwhelming fast.
If that was you literally last Friday night, don’t panic lol you’re literally not alone in this struggle. So many female business owners jump straight into design before laying the foundation, and that’s where most websites go wrong. Even when you persevere and end up with something you think is cute, a stunning website means nothing if it doesn’t convert visitors into paying clients.
Whether you’re a service provider, coach, or creative entrepreneur, I got you! Here’s how to build a strong, strategic website that actually grows your business.
Before you even open a website builder, there’s a lot of work to do. The very first step is to pause and ask: Who am I building this for?
Your website isn’t about you. Repeat with me: I AM NOT MY IDEAL CLIENT. Great! Now that we got that out of the way, then WHO are they? What are they struggling with? What are they searching for online? What’s going to make them stop scrolling and think, “This is exactly what I’ve been looking for”?
Spend time defining your ideal customer’s persona. Give her a name, a lifestyle, even a Pinterest board if you want! Knowing your audience deeply helps you speak their language. Not just in your copy, but in your visuals and layout too.
Step 2: Build a Simple Wireframe
I knooooow, you’re SO excited to start making things look cute but, let me hold your hand when I say this: designing before planning is like decorating a house without walls.
You need a structure first. That’s where wireframing comes in. A wireframe is just a simple sketch (even on paper!) of what will go where. Decide the sequence of events, what’s on your hero section, about blurb, services, testimonials, contact form, etc…?
Mapping this out helps you visualize the user journey. Where do you want them to click next? What’s the first thing you want them to see?
Pro tip: less is more. A clean, strategic layout always outperforms a cluttered one.
Once you got the bones of your website figured out, it’s time to start gathering the decor to put up later. Our main goal here is to ensure that the content for each section and the visuals you are collecting match your brand.
Remember when we talked about this not being about you? Ok, great. We’re gonna go there again: Your website copy should use “you” more than “we.” Tell them what’s in it for them. Keep it conversational, like you’re chatting over coffee, not reading from a brochure.
When it comes to visuals, quality matters. Grainy, mismatched photos can instantly cheapen your brand. If you can, invest in a brand photoshoot that reflects your vibe and values.
Ok, you got all the pieces of the puzzle laying around, it’s time to start building it.
But don’t fall into the trap of overdoing it. Every color, font, movement, and image should have a purpose. Your goal is to guide the visitor’s eye naturally through your site. Use hierarchy to highlight what matters most ( like your services or your “Book Now” button).
And remember, you mobile site matters more than your desktop ones. Most people will visit your site from their phones, so make sure everything looks and functions beautifully on smaller screens. I’ve seen too many forms that on mobile hide the “send” button, or popups that don’t close on mobile and the client is now stuck….
Step 5: Implement an SEO Strategy
Once your design is set, don’t forget to make it findable. Without SEO, you’re essentially throwing a party for nobody.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is what helps your dream clients discover you on Google. You don’t need to be an expert, but you do need to:
It’s not magic, but consistency with SEO pays off big time.
What If You’re Still Feeling Overwhelmed?
Girl, I hear you. Building a website that’s both beautiful and strategic can feel like trying to use both sides of your brain at once. It requires creativity, logic, and patience, and that’s a lot when you’re also running your business.
The good news? You don’t have to do it alone. Partnering with a web designer can take that pressure off your shoulders and help you create something that actually works for you, not just looks pretty. Investing on your website can be one of the highest ROI moves you can make in your business.
At Viksen, I design websites that blend clean aesthetics with conversion strategy. Whether you need a quick template, a “Website in a Weekend,” or a fully custom site, my goal is to help you show up online with the same value you deliver in person.
Because when your website works as hard as you do, everything else flows easier.
