UTM Parameters 101: What They Are, Why You Need Them, and 5 Rules of Thumb to Get Them Right

Have you ever looked at your analytics and seen a big chunk of traffic just labeled “direct” or “other” or “not set”? And you ahve no idea where it actually came from? That’s a UTM problem. But we gonna fix that TO-DAY bestie 😉

What is a UTM parameter?

UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module, a name that nobody needs to remember, but the concept is simple. A UTM parameter is a short snippet of text you add to the end of a URL that tells your analytics exactly where a click originated, what campaign it belongs to, and what specific link someone clicked.

A plain link looks like this:

viksen.co/

The same link with UTM parameters looks like this:

viksen.co/?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=strategy-drop-launch&utm_content=link-in-bio

That one string of text is doing a loooot of heavy lifting for your analytics. It’s telling us the platform, the channel type, the campaign, and even which specific button or placement someone clicked.

Why bother?

Because without UTMs, a huge amount of your traffic gets miscategorized. Clicks from an email opened in a desktop app, a QR code on a flyer, a link pasted into a text thread, all of that can show up as “direct” traffic with zero context. That makes it nearly impossible to answer the questions that actually matter for your business:

  • Which platform is sending the highest quality traffic?
  • Which email subject line got more clicks?
  • Which CTA in your email actually converted?
  • Is that ad spend paying off, or just burning budget?

UTM tags solve that by embedding the answer directly into the link itself.

5 rules of thumb to make sure UTMs always work

1. Lowercase, always. UTM parameters are case-sensitive, which means “Instagram” and “instagram” show up as two separate sources in your reports. Pick lowercase and never break from it.

2. Dashes, never spaces. Spaces in a URL get converted into “%20” or a plus sign, which makes your links messy and your data harder to read. Use a dash to separate words, like spring-sale, and reserve underscores for words meant to read as one concept.

3. Never tag internal links. UTMs are built to track traffic coming in from somewhere else. Slap them on links within your own site and you risk overwriting the original source data mid-visit, which is just bound to wreck your attribution.

4. Keep your campaign name consistent across every channel. The power of a UTM system is comparison. If your campaign parameter changes between email, social, and paid, you lose the ability to compare how each channel performed for that same push.

5. Don’t skip the content parameter. It’s optional, which is exactly why most people skip it, and exactly why they regret it later. Use utm_content to tell apart different placements or CTAs within the same campaign, like link-in-bio versus footer-cta. That’s the difference between knowing a campaign worked and knowing which part of it worked.

The takeaway

A UTM strategy is about making sure the work you’re already doing gets credit for what it actually drives. A few consistent habits now save you hours of messy, unfixable data later.
